i used to volunteer at the IPRC (independent publishing resource center) in portland, oregon. they have an amazing 5500+ zine/comic library that i raided weekly during my shift, taking home huge stacks at a time. HOWEVER, i just recently produced my own zine that i am really excited about and would like to start trading with people.
what's the trading protocol? send other authors an email and ask if they are interested? just mail 'em a zine with a note saying, "wanna trade"? or simply mail them your zine, no trade innuendo necessary? you are all probably old timers, so what do you like?
OH and my zine is called "my friends and their tall bikes". it's primarily drawings. speaking of which, anyone interested in trading?
if so! my interests aside from bicycles:
1. general DIY culture
2. free fun!
3. creating community places and encouraging local participation
4. building shelters on your own (i lived in a yurt i built most of last year!)
5. juggling/circus (the yurt was on a 'juggling farm'!)
6. beautiful/simple sketches and daily comics (ex. clutch!)
yeah! thanks for existing!
love,
kelly peach

Re: new zinester, any advice on trading?
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 9:59 AMWhew! It's sort of a big topic, in my opinion.
First, is your zine generally free or do you charge for it? Is it "free for trade" or swap-for-stamps or exchange-for-donuts(or beer)?
If it's generally free, then I'd just send a copy to the person you want to trade with, and ask them to send you a copy in return. I think in general most zinesters enjoy getting the personal notes along with zines or requests for zines. You can also help by occasionally sending stamps and a return address label with your zine.
For myself, most of my zines are free, or 3 stamps by mail. It usually is 2 stamps to send it back, and the extra one goes to cover postage to prisons or other folks who wouldn't necessarily get access to them.
